Folic Acid vs Folate

Folic acid is the man-made version of the vital pregnancy vitamin B9.  In order for the body to utilise B9 in this form it has to first go through some changes within the body that unfortunately a large portion of the world's population are incapable of doing. (look up MTHFR) .  For this reason, we recommend that any woman trying to conceive, or in the first 3 months of pregnancy, should supplement with folate (and NOT folic acid).  Unfortunately, most prenatal multivitamins only come with the cheaper folic acid.

If you are looking for a full prenatal vitamin with the most bioavailable ingredients then this is the one that we at Libra Health recommend above all others:  BioCare Methyl Pregnancy multinutrient.

What the NHS says about Folic acid?

Highly recommended for pregnant women and those trying to conceive. You should take a 400 micrograms folic acid tablet every day before you're pregnant and until you're 12 weeks pregnant. Folic acid can help prevent birth defects known as neural tube defects, including spina bifida. If you did not take folic acid before you conceived, you should start as soon as you find out you're pregnant.
